BLACKFRIARS

The Mission Revival style of architecture draws inspiration from the early Spanish Missions of California which is reflected throughout this most impressive 700sqm eco-friendly lodge or home and is located within a five-minute drive of the Wanaka township. Characteristic similarities include thick masonry walls with arches, enclosed courtyard, entry portal, tiled long exterior arcade and bell tower to name a few.

The surrounding mountain views from this 17-ha rural property are stunning which can be admired from most of the rooms within the property due to the clever design. Numerous sets of French doors open onto either the large tiled arcade or enclosed courtyard enjoying either the sunshine or shade of the day.

The six king size bedrooms each contain a full ensuite bathroom. Three bedrooms on the upper level have their own balcony and three on the ground floor open onto the flagstone courtyard which leads to the heated swimming pool and sunbathing area. The pool lies within the most unique rural surrounds, totally private to the outside world.

Formal paneled wooden doors provide entry to the dramatic central atrium with a sweeping curved staircase to the second floor lounge. Alongside the expansive outlook towards Black Peak and the forever changing head of the lake, this lounge boasts a wood burner and bar making it quite the place to relax after a day of activity within Wanaka surrounds. Adjoining this lounge is a cosy library with floor to ceiling book lined shelves, where one can peruse until your heart’s content. The library also provides for a perfect office, where a large desk, filing area and internet access is currently in place.

The commercial kitchen with walk in chiller and pantry has a servery to the long dining room which is capable of hosting quite the banquet. The inviting leather loungers around the open fire at the end of the room is the favourite spot between courses to sip a lovely glass of Pinot Noir produced from the onsite boutique vineyard providing approximately 150 cases per year.

The tower over the double garage and workshop houses the artist studio which has plenty of natural light to work with and is bridged to the library via the outdoor causeway. The 154sq m American style barn allows a lot of additional garaging and storage including a sheltered lean-to on one side.

This unique property was designed and operated as a luxury eco-lodge which gained a Qualmark five-star rating, however the current owners have loved it as their family home. A new chapter in their lives has given an opportunity not to be missed.
